Entrepreneurship Research, Teaching, Service, and Practice

Ph.D. (Doctoral) Degree in Entrepreneurship ~ PhD in Business Administration

Academic interest in entrepreneurship has grown substantially in recent decades. New theories of venture creation, entrepreneurial behaviors, team formation, opportunity recognition, etc. have been proposed, debated, and grudgingly accepted. The availability of high-quality and/or high-value entrepreneurship data has undoubtedly accelerated academic research in this area. Scholars at business schools are keen to understand how and why entrepreneurs think, behave, and act during the venturing process.

Doctoral students in entrepreneurship tend to focus their research efforts at three broad levels: the individual entrepreneur, the entrepreneurial team, or the firm itself. Each of these can be studied from numerous perspectives, e.g., psychology, economics & finance, sociology, marketing, strategy, etc. Furthermore, different theories of management can be drawn upon in order to explain the empirical findings of a PhD dissertation or thesis. This includes upper echelons theory, resource theory, systems theory, etc. Clearly, graduate students of entrepreneurship must learn to not only compile and/or access relevant datasets for analysis but also ‘connect the dots’ between their hypotheses, findings, and the underlying principles of entrepreneurial behavior, skills, and education.
